How long until all 3D modeling is done via sculpting and automated retopology? 3D feels like a medium that is split between something intuitive for creatives (sculpting) and something mechanical and autistic (conventional 3D modeling)

you can automate a lot, but you need to solve first the issue of machines not understanding context.
Basically you require sci fi skynet concious AI before doing something as simple as a machine taking artistic choices.

just train the resulting output and change the algorithm as you go, same as you would if you were teaching a human

Humans really do have to ruin everything by min-maxing.

Forever. AI cannot even do photogrammetry without introducing shitton of trash that needs to be manually cleaned.

and the machine wont be able to do anything but repeat and automate the same task it was trained where if you change 1% the input, it crashes.

>sculpting
The workflow of the future is:
-pick a basemesh/sketch a blob
-rip your favorite waifus from sketchfab
-style transfer features
-done.

I actually like how mechanical 3D modeling is. Suits people that have both artistic and technical skills. ZBrush is too artsy fartsy for me.

I love both polymodeling a face from scratch and sculpting, but there's something in retopologizing a face after sculpting it that revolts me

jarvis, take waifu model, bend her over - turn 180 degrees, yep just like that- import 'huge BWC.obj', position at these coordinates.. attach the selected object to player.pelvis.bone and boot up VR simulator.. actually- jarvis, play fart and braps youtube compliation ontop of that
yep.. its waifu time

>a medium split between creative and mechanical
This applies to literally everything in the real world. If you want your creations to do anything beyond looking pretty frozen in time, then you have to apply mechanics. You can make beautiful sculptures all you want, but they'll have a bout as much utility as a marble statue in a gallery.
>how long
Technically you can do that now, depending on what you're doing it'll probably be good enough. But nothing will ever reach the point where you won't have to do any manual adjustments.
Retopo is so fucking easy anyway, just suck it up.

Only a subset of surfaces lends themselves to sculpting where as everything can be modeled. So basically never, or at least not until we have a General Intelligence AI and humans are obsolete.
