>games and movies are not feasible industry to profit from
what did he mean by this?
every single vacancy I've seen recently is asking for a 3d generalist for games or films

I think you might have very high standards or see those companies as more professional than they actually are, a friend of mine has a very meh portfolio but still got hired in a local company.
If that doesn't convince you, then try aiming for architectural rendering (if you know how to use CAD or any of those programs, I don't know your background)
If that's not your deal, try making 3d printing, maybe figures for tabletop games or parts for engineering projects (if you know how to use solidworks or software alike)
there's always a market for everything, as long as you can show that you can do what they want, you get a chance for a job.
Best advice for portfolio (if you are planning on that) look for the job you want, see if there have been vacancies in the past and try to learn everything or most of the things they ask for.
Once you did that, ALWAYS make something to show that you know how to use X software, because it has happened to me, kinda like
>So you said in your CV that you know this software but you don't have any of that in your portfolio, why is that?
>...
>...
>Uh... trust me, I know how to use it
and of course I don't get the job.
Don't make my mistake, have something to show ALWAYS

i applied in deviantart and is mostly turn to dirt by my competition who had cheaper price. Lots of unreturned calls and interview failed. like this one company i failed three times and they still took me without telling me why they didny take me the first time and whatnot and i was pretty sure i showed everything consistently so it seems the hirer is too little than the hirable? idk. can i see your friend's portofolio?

A lot of luck I guess. I've been searchi g for close to 4 months now and have sent my cv and portfolio a bit more than 100 times. I got 3 interview in total and one offer for dirt poor money that I had to turn down since i had to move country as well. By no mean am I the best but i'm far from the worse, i'm decent. This industry is just so fucking closed it pisses me off. People are either looking for anons with experience or a junior with the level of a senior
One clasmate managed to find a job as a lead character artist before graduating and he wasn't the best but also far from the worse, also decent. So luck I guess. Never understood anons saying it's easy to get a job if you know the basic, i guess they either are lying or work in india
For the time being im just grinding my portfolio and hope I find something

If you have to lower your prices that much to the point that you are basically doing it for free, that's just not profitable AT ALL and says volumes about the company because the results are equal to what they are paying for.
Don't be cheap, value the work you do because nobody else will (also don't be greedy because that will get you nowhere) be really objective about your work and estimate a value with that in mind, if you are a beginner, lower a bit that value but never be too cheap.
Companies are companies, they are very unpredictable and more often than not, the people who hire you are clueless about what 3D represents or who they really need, so it's quite a gamble to get hired, the best thing is to show both quality and consistency
