is it normal to not be able to memorize such massive details of a design/image?
asking 3d cg since 3d uses reference extensively too? or not?
is there a way to "read" a design, character or object, so one could at least maintain its continuity throughout image, with or without tracing paper?

for an artist, yes. If you cant do this from childhood you are not going to make it in this field, you will forever be a wage slave doing boring tasks

Why do you need to memorize if you can use reference? You start simple by blocking everything out to it's simplest shape and work from there.

just wonderin since this guy is doing it and not even bigshots do https://youtu.be/Bg1j9xwcij8
so it must be a common skill or something
and also it looks fun since i dont have to erase or turn on the laptop to ctrl z. generaly fun workflow, if not a very efficient skillset to have... if it is actually one and not some edietic memory bs
