Are you retarded?

Yeah legally, but that's beside the point. Auto-tune is technically "sound editing software", you know.

If you're a zoomer in his first year of his 3D modeling journey, undoubtedly it might seem like black magic that makes PBR textures out of thin air because all you do is throw premade smart materials on your model.
If you have texturing experience, you realize that it's just a faster and more reliable way of doing what you've always done. AKA not a cheat, but a superior texturing tool.

Wait, does the shovel shovel by itself in this scenario? Remarkable.

Is not a magical tool, it just has more default materials and other shit that makes easier to texture.

But I get closer results with armor paint and just proc gen textures from material maker, mask made on krita+inskcape and grunge and other pbr materials from free websites.

We all go through this phase. Eventually you see how pointless it is, especially when you start working in production. I still have the tendency to think some things are cheating, but I do it because that's the only way to complete tasks on time.

It's okay to not know SD, you can do a lot of stuff in SP (+ Zbrush) as well. You don't need to make every tileable from scratch in SD.

It's okay to use photoscanned source material and mix it with proc gen.

It's okay to use premade alpha packs, brushes etc. There's usually not enough time to model every single hard surface detail to stamp it on the mesh, or model every single baroque decorative element when you need a shitton of them to cover a piece of furniture.

I still feel better when I do stuff from scratch, even if all the details of it aren't as good (because there's just not enough time to master everything), but if the goal is to complete things, you can't have that attitude. Nobody will care anyway. Ofc, sometimes art direction will require some specific original designs you have to make from scratch, but a lot of times details are vague and you can just use things from libraries if they speed up the workflow.

I still somewhat suffer from this way of thinking though, and spend more time than necessary on every task, because I still don't use as much premade stuff as I could, which makes me slower than my peers. But it's something we need to get rid of. It's all layers of abstraction in every field, shit is too complex for every individual to reinvent their wheel and make every single thing from scratch.
