Weight painting in Blender fucking sucks help
First of all, for some vertices, it will add even when weight is at 0% in mix. Second, no matter what I do, I always get an almost completely solid red, with only the very edges being between 0 and 1. What the hell am I doing wrong?

You're supposed to adjust the weight and strength values of your brush. You're also supposed to use the blur tool.

No need to, it's glaringly obvious to anyone with a functioning brain that you're a complete moron with nothing to say.

is there a way to have the verts just display what percent they are at instead of having to use the color picker and switch to the brush or just kind of guess by the color? It'd really help me to see the number itself.

It's extremely difficult at first (it is in any program), but you're just going to have to get familiar with it and learn Blender's brushes and not get overly attached to the default settings. There's no way around it. Even good autorigs look like they were done automatically. Touching them up is an okay way to learn if you don't like starting from scratch, but you're making a safe space for yourself instead of learning to properly rig. Watch the tutorials on Youtube if you have to.

I think the problem is, OP's just going to suck in Maya instead of Blender if he does that, and then all he'll have in terms of learning resources is shit from like 20 years ago and you. Anon's right to spit in your face. I'll spit in your face, too, while we're at it.
