๐งต How good is Unreal for movie/animation making?
Anonymous at Fri, 4 Mar 2022 09:07:49 UTC No. 885543
I started reading about Unreal and watching tutorials, and what I gathered, is that it has a superior VFX/Particle system based on nodes, as well as Chaos for very nice looking destruction.
I am Blender user myself, and VFX/Particles is something that I struggle with, in terms of constant weird simulation behavior (especially Fire with it's weird shading settings and non-intuitive shaders and attributes). Also animating destruction - it can be done in Blender, but apparently it is much harder to do in a beautiful way.
But since I am not familiar much with Unreal yet, I am asking how good it actually is, compared to Blender, Maya, Houdini, etc for making movies?
For example, this animation was made in Unreal. How hard it would be to make something similiar to this in other software: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tIp

If I could I would murder every 3D "animator" on Earth. That looks like utter shit. Fuck off

im pretty sure that the only thiing that really was animated was the character's skeletal animations in a DCC like Maya and then imported into unreal. This is the hard part, the animation in the DCC and what you should concern yourself with doing first and foremost.

I meant, whole movie was mainly made via Unreal.
Unreal has node particles, destruction systems and stuff, should one spend time learning Unreal if he wants to make beautiful movies, or stick to Blender/Maya/other software? If someone uses UE - what are advantages of it when it comes to movie making?

The 95% that matters - the character animation - was made in an external DCC that has no relation to unreal. How new are you?

The question alone tells me a lot about your ability.
Look dude, the question is not really how good is Unreal, the question is how good are you?
Can you make an animation like you posted by yourself in ANY software?
If you can't do it with another software, then you can't do it with Unreal - simple as that.
You seem to be under the impression that this has mainly something to do with the ability of the software, rather than your ability as an artist and operator of the program.

You're just mad because animators actually make money and have jobs

Real-time rendering engines are the future of 3D animation. It's only a matter of time.

Seconded.

Unreal is a game engine. Recently it started acting like a movie composition software as well. The advantage of this is its real-time aspect, not some super-fancy all-encompassing solution. Not everyone has access to the computer processing power necessary to make something worthwhile in a pro software like Houdini.

I was never able to figure out how to set up light correctly.
I was never able to use chaos, you have to compile the engine from source and it doesn't worked for me.
Animation is done with other software like Maya etc.
Interface is utter shit.
Materials will take month to create with spaghetti blueprint.
UE will try to sell you shit because too hard and to long to do it yourself.
Particle system is ugly and intuitive.
Overall nice engine but say goodbye to your life if you want to master it, it is made for big team not solo devs.

they ban all sorts of things and deplatform them. Once CNN gets a whiff of a software thats easily spitting out realistic enough cp thats much more convincing than what we have now, its all over. Remember all those AI chatbots that turned racist and sexist? Same deal. Deplatformed, banned. New legislation will probably be written, too.
