🧵 3d scanners?
Anonymous at Sat, 26 Mar 2022 23:38:47 UTC No. 888615
any anons have experience working with 3d scanners? I want to start incorporating 3d objects into my graphic design work but I have no desire to learn 3d modeling beyond the very basics, at least for now. What scanners do you recommend?

You are going to know at least the basic of 3d modeling for that

Almost all of the objects small enough to fit within a 3d scanner's volume are small enough for you to 3d model with little to no trouble. Aside from organic shit.

why would i do that when i could just scan

more like Almost all of the objects small enough to fit within a 3d scanner's volume are small enough for you to 3d scan with your phone with little to no trouble

Because the scans will come out like absolute trash and you'd have to re-make the object anyway.

You will need to clean up and retopologize the scanned model anyhow

this
Also, scanning is good ONLY for recreating objects. But you can't create any from your own. Don't just learn the basics, but also go a bit further. No need to become an expert on sculpting, but y'know, be able to do something as simple as pic related

I work professionally with a 3D scanner every day and I'm a traditionally trained sculptor.
What you're trying to do is in no way viable, it's both time intensive to clean up models and scanners are expensive.
It is technically possible, but a decent 3D scanner that also produces quality textures will cost you around 50k - and that will still require you a lot of time and effort for cleanup.
Even if you get a cheap scanner you will be required to learn how to retopologize, at which point it's already easier how to learn to model from scratch, especially if it's just shitty assets.

I'm just gonna say what we are all thinking:
could you use this thing to make a 3d scan of your dick?
the only issues i could see with that would be staying hard long enough to get it scanned and fitting it on the platform. but you could just take some Viagra and cut a hole in the base.

Speaking of 3D cameras, I've noticed the Kinect has dropped in price significantly over the past year or two. Did a better budget alternative come out at some point or did demand just drop?

Not OP, but I've wanted something like this, because then you can get up close and personal and dissect things without destroying the things you own and without the hassle of a camera or magnifying glass. It sounds sort of useful
