Have we reached the point where 3D will stop aging badly?
I remember thinking that Incredibles was really good looking when it first came out, but I look at it now and it looks ugly and dated. To take it even further, things like Toy Story 1 look almost unwatchably dated now. It feels like 3D has such a short shelf-life while you can take pretty much any old 2D cartoon and it stands timelessly on its own merits.
When will 3D reach the same point?

When the pixar style dies. Look at Arcane, shit won't look dated despite not pushing the technical boundaries of 3d.

Shrek 2 from the same time period holds up fine really

They all hold up fine. All the way back from Toy Story (I know they chose specifically toys so you won't have uncanny valley stuff happening but still)

> shit won't look dated
You're speaking about Pixar or Arcane?

simple. things age better the more creative thought is put into it rather than just trying to force the latest technology memes into the production.

>can take pretty much any old 2D cartoon and it stands timelessly on its own merits.
Factually incorrect. Modern 2D animation alot fo the time is created digitally which means its 10x faster which means it can utilize more frames so its smoother. It also allows for higher quality overall and near pinpoint consistency. Anyways COMPUTER generated assets will continue to improve over time as COMPUTERS advance to answer your retarded question.

Factually incorrect. Modern 2D animation now days is created digitally which means its 10x faster to create You can utilize more drawings per frame on average so its typically smoother. It also allows for higher quality overall and near pinpoint consistency. As for your retarded question computer assets will improve over time as computers get stronger as they always have.

Modern 2D animation is mostly puppet rigs. Puppet rigs don't give you anything close to the freedom you have with manually drawing frames but yes, they are smooth but you are still retarded.

If we use japan as an example since they're churning out the most 2d animation at the moment theyre still mostly hand drawing their works. Its only pieces of shit like rick and morty that uses rigs for their animation.

I like the way it looks. It looks fake- but hyper realistic at the same time. Also, compared to 3D movies these days, it's super sharp and clean looking.

I love old 3D stuff. It's unwatchable in the same way that classical music is unlistenable. Only if you're an uncultured rube. Open your mind to enjoying things and appreciating them as they are.

Grim. I bet you're the kind who can't watch black and white films and love Michael Bay.

Still, they have been using a trick for years now: Use 3D instead of animatics to speed up animation. From buildings, to backgrounds to help with posing and organizing a scene, they go for the cheap, fast 3D and then cover it up with digital coloring to make it blend with the hand drawn portions. Sometimes it works seamlessly and sometimes it looks like shit.
You see it more often nowadays, specially if machines or vehicles are involved in any way, but if the studio gets clever it is hard to notice when used on things like buildings, mountains or the sky.

Film is a visual medium. You can make a movie without a plot but you can't make a movie without visuals.
