What can Max do that others can't? I signed up for the free trial, but it ran out before I could use it and I can't pirate, because I just wont pirate software anymore after experiencing BSOD multiple times.

Modifiers and the stack. Kinda redundant in this day and age because everything needs a sculpt pass. If they just integrated Mudbox it would be the goat again.

get the student version. i'm pretty sure all you need to do is send them a document or email proving your in education. its super great for modelling since you can seperate each change to a different layer, but the UV system looks awful

if your already paying for maya you don't need max then. they aren't all that different. it's better to just stick to maya since it's alot more modern. the only difference i can think of is the modelling stack. everything else in maya is alot better

I think 3DS Max is the best because it has a good balance between ease of use/simplicity and the number of features.
Example:
Cinema 4D is even easier to use than 3DS Max, but is very limited and has very few features compared to Max.
With Maya I find the user interface to be very complex and convoluted, even though Maya was the first 3D software I learned. But it does have lots of advanced features, especially for animation.
If you mostly do modeling and texturing, but no complex character animation, then 3DS Max is more than adequate.
