Looks like just a single texture with detailed lighting, just start messing around with settings until you get it i guess?

It's art that is based on mixing various procedural algorithms that deform/stretches/shades and you explore
combinations til you come up with something you find visually interesting.

At the core you'll find ample use of stacked spacewarp modifiers, displaced using your usual suspect perlin noise/vornoi/swirl/maelstrom/smoke algorithms.
The blur beta pack for max was very popular back in the day and contains lot of algorithms useful for effects like these.

All still available free for max over at classic maxplugins.de, a site any max vet knows well.

Here's a random thing I made just now stacking some modifiers to give a taste of how these sort of things are made. This gay shape is generated from a regular plane with some algorithms running ontop as shown in the modifier stack to the right.

When happy you take a big ol' photoshit ontop of it and add some filters and obligatory techno-sounding nonsense.

Then you just go ham and listen to a skrillex song or some shit and rack every filter slider you can and warp and stack filters ontop of one another.

I make fun of this now but I used to do stuff like this for real back when I was a teen, that's why I know how to do it. Tnx anon for giving me an excuse to play around with this, was fun.
Now it's back to work :(

This definitely has some 2005-2009 brooding sci-fi anime vibes.
Like GitS SAC or Ergo Proxy.
Bet this shit would start being popular in 3 years or so.

it's already having a resurgence, at least where i live. a lot of rave visuals these days look like they're from 20 years ago. nothing new under the sun

i remember seeing this stuff back in the day (early 00s) getting pumped out by depthcore.
did it actually originate from that group or were they just doing shitty riffs on alex rutterford's / someone else's work
