Pill me on xgen hair. How does it compare to fibermesh?

XGen is great. It has a lot more control than Fibermesh when it comes to modeling, shading, and rendering. And it's more pipeline friendly since you can go back and change things with less struggle.
I personally use Ornatrix which is similar to XGen but has more spline options and can better support a non destructive workflow. ...Also, because I'm locked into Max and their built in Hair and Fur is kind of balls.

Turning a curve into a card is pretty basic stuff. Houdini has a sop that does it for you for example.
