๐งต 3D for game modding
Anonymous at Fri, 3 Jun 2022 04:02:49 UTC No. 901122
I've been thinking of learning 3D modelling to build cool assets for games I like, specifically characters and weird/cool guns. Does anyone here have any experience with that?
How long would it take to be able to build assets like firearms rigged for animations and bodies/faces for model swaps?
Is there any recommended software? I started on Blender and it seems to be more popular nowadays, but other tutorias for older games use 3ds Max plenty and have custom scripts/plugins for it.

I do stuff for Skyrim, so far the best results are achieved through some open source tools found across several modding sites (i.e. Nexus) which allow you to convert 3d models and animations into actual assets that can be used ingame.
Personally I use blender, but I guess you can take advantage of 3DMax plugins.

What sort of stuff do you do? Weapons, armor?
Did you take too long to learn how to do acceptable mods?

It takes me less than I do with characters, but rather than ask those questions it's best to measure your own speed when making those types of assets in different software or procedures. Don't be afraid to dip your toes in.
If you have no idea, buy a tutorial for it on flippednormals or artstation

work through the tutorial and apply those techniques into making a few new guns

Both, and yeah, it took me quite a bit since back in 2013 I became interested, but only managed to successfully edit game assets until 2015 and from 2017 I improved a lot. I'm still quite far from modelling and animating firearms, since unlike medieval stuff they have lots of moving parts
