How do I pull off the 2.5D look in a game engine like Unity? I'm assuming the backgrounds are planes of pixel art with transparency?
And the player moves in X + Y(Unity's Vertical is Y) directions.
Would it just be simpler if I sculpted a 3d character, retopo'd and rendered the directional movements and used it as Sprite sheet? Instead of drawing and animating planes?
If pulling off pixel art 2.5D is more difficult than normal 2.5D, then I'd avoid it. I'm looking to make a metroidvania platformer.

I don't use Unity (or do dev of any type), but last time I tried, I thought Unity had some kind of dedicated 2d/2.5d mode, didn't it?
I don't think it did much more than give you some preset settings and stuff, but it still relied on the 3d engine, so you could do depth shit with it.
