What are some good free or cheap programs for creating massive world maps. I've been using Gaea but the 1024 resolution limit on the free version is cringe.
I've also tried world creator 3 but it's currently lacking alot of features.

You can bypass the res limit by just exporting the terrain in the file menu instead of using the fancy-pants exporter it comes with.
When you use the command that way, it creates a map based on the resolution of the geo in your viewport. So if you're at 4k it'll export at 4k.
It's been a while since I've updated Gaea so that loophole might not still be there, but it definitely works with the version I've always used.

Any new word on a Linux version? I remember hearing they were planning to support it.

1.2.0.3, apparently.
It's probably pretty back there in terms of updates. I haven't used it in a looong while, so I never felt the need to update. It's a terrain generator, as long as it generates terrain that looks better than ANT Landscape, I don't really need to update it. Especially if they patched out that resolution loophole.
The other generators are pretty good, but Gaea is just really intuitive to me, especially with the viewport.

Not sure when they patched it but the export button in the file menu doesn't exist in 1.3 versions anymore. Also the export button is greyed out for me so idk how to get around that

I haven't actually tried this yet but I thought it looked usable. It's still a bit new though.

You might work for free but you also have access to decades of software projects that you can use for free as well, sure beats having to pay someone for every dependencies you need.
