🧵 Pirated software
Anonymous at Thu, 14 Jul 2022 17:00:26 UTC No. 908212
Has anyone ever gotten in trouble/will I get in trouble for selling assets made with pirated software (eg. ZBrush, Photoshop etc)?

you get blacklisted, he gets his money back, your life is over. A similar thing just happened to me on amazon and I got my money back months after the sale and the seller was b& (and probably also v&)

I swear I saw a thread earlier about Autodesk being able to detect whether or not an asset was used with pirated software, by checking the metadata in a model's vertices. I can't find the post now but if it's real, then that's how you'd get caught for sailing the high seas. Maybe try importing/exporting with Blender to see if it removes that alleged data?

Try the other way around, make a model in Blender then import/export with Max or Maya. The watermark can be embedded as tiny perturbations in the vertex coordinates themselves and is visible when analysing the "waveform" of the mesh. If the vertex coords are different then Autodesk is doing something shady.

no one in this thread is either, so you might as well help him out :^)

You could launder fbx using blender but problem is when the client wants the actual project file.

a friend asked me to make a gta style town for him for 500 bucks, i made it on a cracked 3ds max 2010, he also uses cracked autodesk stuff.

Wouldn't be your problem I guess, you can just blame them, but what happens then? lol

Yeah that's what I wonder, if my project is released on an Unreal marketplace for example and somehow someone finds out some of my contractors weren't using licesend software, who gets fucked? Would anyone even care enough to look for such things in the first place though?

Autodesk are becoming the new foundry. People are complaining about more inspections and phone calls.

How can I inspect models / textures by myself to find out if they have been made with a software with valid license?

In our uni they taught us how to remove a "student check" for .ma files. Turns out you just have to remove a line of text that literally says "student licence" in the .ma file when open with a text editor. What a shitty security measure lmao, so I highly doubt they are doing anything that sophisticated with the model if they can't even implement a half decent student licence check in the scene files

You mean selling a UE scene for example, without fbx and substance files? Wouldn’t someone be able to find out if they export models from Unreal? I’d like to know how to inspect them myself if it’s even possible. But yeah, source files wouldn’t be sold.
