Finally, a good free engine. Anyone using it?

FWIW, unrealshit isnt free, since in the license you have to pay up past a certain amount. Real free engines would never have those stipulations.

Anonymous No. 914777

now that they're monetizing it with that new company i give it like two years before they start putting the most important functionality in paid plugins or requiring a contract to ship commercially. they're just starting with console support, but you know it's only a matter of time before they let the ios and android platforms decay and only provide support for people with contracts. then eventually, since they won't make enough money to satisfy their investors, they will get acquihired by some big corporation, and cease development all together. they made this big deal about having the former ceo of redhat as an advisor. well, where is redhat now?

lmao
the amount you're referring to is 1mio. afaik, and you'll never make that. even if you did, choosing a way worse engine (and thereby impacting quality) wouldn't be worth the saved fees. you're fucking retarded and you're ngmi.

Why do you allow simple words to have such a strong negative effect on you?

You can just fork it :^) I mean, not (you) of course, oh no, but some hero autist will definitely step up to the plate and continue to develop the bastard project with the same love and care as if it was his own brainchild. The open source community is amazing.

Not that anon but how was any of what he said hate speech? He posted words- characters on a screen, directed at nobody in particular. None of which harmed you in any meaningful or measurable capacity- if the fictional posts on this site (as noted ABOVE the global rules) offend you, just leave bro

It is a pain in the ass to make games with. Unity, Gamemake4 p and UE are straightforward and flexible

Godot isn't bad, but obviously an incomplete work in progress.

You can use it if you want to, but you're going to be writing your own functions a LOT before you can even start making a game.

LookAt(vector3 target, vector3 forwardaxis)? Sorry, that function that just about every 3D game is going to use doesn't exist. You've got to write it yourself!

SpawnClass(string class, vector3 pos, vector 3 rot) Nope! That doesn't exist either. Write your own function!

Is it hard to write these functions? Not really, but these are so fucking universal in coding games, that it's absurd that they're not there. I shudder to think how many hundreds of thousands of man-hours have already been wasted by all the coders writing their own countless, scarcely different versions these same basic bits of code that should just be in the engine to begin with.

Two black coworkers (I know, I fucked up in life and ended up in a shitty job) call each other nigga all the time at work, I ignore that, but they also sometimes play black music on loudspeaker in the office that has word nigger in the lyrics (I told them to stop playing that garbage because its muh rayciss and it is legit garbage music, they complained but did indeed stop playing it.

Godot has it's flaws, but these ain't them.

same poster, I just want to add an example of a real flaw I have seen, would be something like an FBX importer. Could not get that working on my end. Had to use the godot scene exporter from blender to get anything out without exploding bones.

now with their new company, you will be able to buy those functions from their asset store!

why would you want to use blend files instead of USD?

blep No. 915163

GLTF is the superior format for Godot, and superior in general but in Unity you should stick with FBX for the support.

Being able to quickly do something in one thing, apply the changes, and have the small change quickly go through and be testable is huge

Versus having to wait for something to be translated into something else and then compiled and then whatever else until you get to view the asset in game (and find out you made a typo on a texture filepath so one part of the asset is hot pink)

A large enough proportion of Godot users also use Blender that someone spent the time to make importing blend files into Godot easier.

Alternatives are O3DE (based on CryEngine) and Strider3D. But as far as i see, those are not as popular as Godot and tutorials are scarce. But Godot isn't really good for medium to big 3D projects.

Personally, I'm just taking the Epic pill. I don't fully like it, but there are compromises i have to take if i want to make a game by my own.

checking it but it doesn't look like unity and im confused and don't want to put in effort to not be confused

Anonymous No. 917640

Use unity as a level-editor and write an engine yourself, or do web-dev until you have money to hire people to wrie a basic engine for your specific use-case if you hate paying to Epic so much.
