It took me 10 years to realize one of the reasons why this CGI worked so well was because of the specific materials Davy Jones was made of.
Skin and hair are two materials we still can't get right nearly two decades later. But squid? You can make some pretty convincing surfacing with just a standard shader and some SSS, and it's good enough to fool us because we're not squid people.
