I wanna learn how to make guns and other weapons. Not to make money, just for fun. Any tips on getting started? Good program to use for beginners, videos, and channels to check out, etc.

Fusion 360 could be the best option, if you want to texture them substance and animations in maya.

Eugene Petrov for texturing.
The modeling part of his xdm tutorial is fucking weird because he models the HP directly in Zbrush. Something more industry standard would be dynamesh + boolean, with the HP/LP being made in a DCC like Max/Maya/Blender. Or you can look up Fusion modeling tutorials, but you might have a hard time finding a good one that covers retopo and unwrapping of your CAD model.
But really, go on Gumroad, the AS Store, or AS Learning, search for hard surface tutorials, pick one where the end result looks good, and you'll learn how to achieve that specific end result.

Stay away from Arrimus, Chamferzone, and Blender Bros. They're all either Dunning-Krugers or fucking dinosaurs, and teach some pretty horrible practices no one should be using.

I found you a decent course, just watch this. Bonus is it's for Blender, which is not only free, but just as capable as Maya/Max for hard-surface modeling, if not better.

Please don't watch this, it's fucking awful.

What is your issue with arrimus?

Thanks, guys. This is way more informative than I was expecting.

>Alex Medina has contributed to titles like Hunt: Showdown.

That's one of my inspirations for wanting to learn. Mad helpful.

he's not wrong. Arrimus is so bad he had to "quit"

Regular industry modeler:
>Is fast
>Uses hotkeys
>Relies on modern-day tools and workflows
>If doing subd, will do it in a non-retarded way

Arrimus:
>Takes several hours to model a power outlet
>Spends half his time clicking on shit in the UI
>Creates his bevels by moving verts by hand
>Box models like it's 2004
>Does some retarded subd models full of thousands of loops, still gets pinching
>Thinks the pinnacle of design is insetting and extruding your existing geometry
>Probably still quadcaps all of his cylinders "to be safe"

look up "how to draw [guns]"
study the anatomy/structure of [guns]
save a bunch of pictures in an inspo folder
then look up [gun] 3d modelling workflow
if you want to do this for games, type in "for games" after

Why? I thought he is pretty good? I fing his revolver workflow a little strange, hard to control, but what is your reasoning?

Anonymous No. 927041

>>927034
nta but i think he's referring to some of Chamferzone's older stuff. the new revolver video is actually pretty good, and his workflow is fairly similar to what Alex Medina uses; the same one mentioned here

What is with the obsession of guns and swords? What is it about actually feeling like you're cool because you're making some 3D guns for a game? I've seen multiple "gun artists" acting like they're above the rest and doing some complicated stuff.

There it is. Like clockwork, there is always one of these fags that pop up to say "Why do you want that?"
Every fucking time. I see these fags on any and every type of forum.

If you want them to be realistic in both form and function, take a look at all of the different people making their own guns. The 3d print guys are all pretty good at modeling but they're not too interested in modeling things that look cool in 3d.
If you know how a gun functions you'll be able to make a much more realistic looking firearm, and if you know a decent bit about ergonomics you can make a gun that people will wish they could own.
Also having a good understanding of how firearms function will help you if you ever decide to rig them for animation.
Pic is of the whacky 8 shot Taurus I picked up at one auction, look at how ridiculously huge the cylinder is to fit 8 rounds of 357

Well, it seems many say the same thing because there's some truth in it. People for some reason really like their guns, swords and half naked girls, artstation trending is always full of them. I can appreciate the technical mastery on these things, but the topic itself... Really shallow IMHO.

Anonymous No. 931049

>>931042
Youre projecting this shit dude. Some faggot self masturbatory intellectual dribble while people in the thread are actually talking about technical aspects of weapons.

It depends, do you want to make lots of guns for games, or do you want to make single showpieces for a portfolio? If you just want to make lots of guns for your personal enjoyment, do this: https://www.artstation.com/artwork/X1Qnda
Just blender and photoshop, most of the stuff linked here is for industry pros and not hobbyists, and the tutorials wouldn't make sense for you to follow unless you were looking to get work in it the industry.
