As a /3/d artist, what would be the easiest shippable game I could make as a solo dev? I can code/design, but my main strength is in visuals. Is there something I can make that's more fun than a walking sim?

I'm not a character artist so it can't be porn.

Anonymous No. 926514

the main idea behind dev is that you (re-) create what you yourself enjoy - so what is the fucking point of asking others what that is? video games generally went to shit because companies became large enough for soulless, corporate psychopaths to make the decisions instead of dreamy idealistic programmers. bobby kotic for instance used to work at coca cola before gutting out a video company that used to be known for delivering quality and turned it into a ingame-trading money machine.

now you're telling me you have that same psychopath mindset ("do what sells, not what fascinates you") AND no team? wow how i can't wait to play that! the joke is on you, because selling garbage to 15-year-olds only works due to massive marketing (including buying magazines reviews), and you don't have that.

oh also le scary horror slenderman clone #1733 i guess.

You sound salty, anon. I'm not trying to make the next Call of Duty and fill it with predatory monetization tactics, I'm literally just brainstorming for fun game ideas a solo dev could make.

Generic retro doom/quake clones.

A new one releases almost every week and every single one of them will shift a thousand or so sales thanks a to a cottage industry of dedicated youtubers who will cover every release in the genre.

Sadly I'm a first worlder, so I would need to make a decent amount of sales just to live.

Assuming a price point of $15 (which seems about average for indies), and personal expenses of 50k/yr, and being incredibly optimistic by saying that after licenses, Steam's cut, hiring contractors for stuff I can't do myself, and other operating expenses I get to take home 50% of my total sales, I'd still need to sell 7000 units to recoup one year of solo development. If we double that to be more realistic, that's 15k units. And that's only for one year - I want to release a reasonably polished and complete game, which likely means multiple years of development.

30-50k sales is pretty far from the 1 mil+ units top indie games are able to sell nowadays, but it still seems like an extremely tough target to hit, and definitely not something you'd have an easy time getting in certain niche genres, even with a very good game.

Fuck the numbers man . You will buy a huge bag of rice , a couple tubs of Gfuel , a foam roller , and a closet sized bedroom to rent. and then set sail and make the best you got, sink or swim

>>926580
>literally NOT A SINGLE WORD about what games, movies or other forms of art fascinate him
>instead terms such as "price point" and calculations about how many copies need to be sold
>needs 50.000$ a year to survive as a solo dev
luckily people like you never make it. you are the cancer that has ruined video games, and i genuinely hope the following for you:
may you find advice for a semi-scam (game only made with money in mind but marketed as artistic indie effort) that gets you to invest years of your life into such a project, then end up not finishing it or having someone steal "your" idea.

you know, you could have just been honest and went: "yeah I'm a soulless drone that just wants to milk the fact that retarded teens will buy 2 dozen games per steam sale and only play 2 of them ever", but instead you accuse first, only to give proof of the accusation one post later.
good luck with your game, anon.

That's the thing though, I wanna make a genuinely good game (thus why I said "more fun than a walking sim" as a criteria in the OP). There's plenty of game genres I enjoy but aren't realistic targets for a solo dev, and there's plenty of other genres that would be easy to break into (like MTX-riddled basic puzzle games for mobile) that I don't vibe with because they're the antithesis of fun.
I feel like the challenge is discovering the sweet spot of games that's feasibly attainable by a solo dev, but also fun to play and have an audience.

dreamers, people with ambitions, don't theorize about feasibility. the only people that do are soulless megacorp zombies and losers that wish they could become them.
you can't fool me: if it was about "fun", you'd do what is fun - but you're not after fun, you're after what will realistically make a profit.

you are a jew. you are cancer.

see, that's where you lost the plot and revealed that your only intention is to attempt to hurt (randomly flinging shit at the wall, really), not to make a point.

it's always the same with you non-people:
first you attack actual humans by shitting on anything civilized.
then, when rightfully told how pathetic you are, you ignore all arguments being made and desperately throw the same, tired ad hominems at your opponent.
once the discussion has arrived at a point where you essentially communicate like a 5-year-old from the bronx, you declare yourself victorious even though your behavior is proof that you have lost.
