how often do they have a new major release? it looks like they do a "perpetual license" but you gotta buy a new license to go from v3 to v4. they give a discount, but the value of that would depend on how soon they'll go from v4 to v5. it could be effectively a subscription in disguise

Yeah, precisely people like you.

Do you even know what perpetual license means? If you buy a license for v4, you get all the updates for v4 and you can install and uninstall it as much as you want, forever. If you want v5 or beyond, you pay it.

It's no different than buying a Windows license. You bought Windows XP, you got all the updates up to SP3. And if you want to upgrade to 7 or 10 you buy a new license.
