"Calarts" is an unfunny meme, spawned by artist turned dumbass John Kricfalusi to insult, of all things , the Iron Giant. The actually funny thing is that Kricfalusi's own art style has deteriorated over time.
There was a time when the guy did those wonderful, but at the same time horrifying hyper-detailed gross-up shots , that Ren and Stimpy was famous for (motherfucker even helped make an entire animation tropes about them : https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.
What happened ? He got lazy.....
The "cal arts" style that everyone is cringing about is just a combination of:
-The industry aping what's popular
-Animation studios trying to work as cheaply and quickly as possible .
Today it seems to be Steven Universe (whose creator didn't even go to calarts) , and Rick and Morty.
Before it was Adventure Time, in the late 90's it was McCracken 's squares for everything approach to backgrounds and over the top edginess , in the 80's everyone looked like identical mannequins and action figures.

It's the same reason Anime no longer has beautiful hand painted backgrounds for their shots, characters no longer have hashing , VFX shots like lasers/ anime ki moves are just solid color balls and lines composited in Premiere instead of the layered in effects you used to get, and so on.
Anime isn't immune from this either

-Whatever hangups you or anyone in this thread has about art styles has more to do with the industry wanting to make stuff quick and for cheap.

Have you seen calarts entry portfolios vs grad projects?
It’s rough. I don’t know if by the end I’d necessarily say they all draw what is known as the “calarts” style, but it’s pretty close. All their originality and skill has been worked out, they all draw in this low effort, knockoff anime style, and the subject matter? Almost always a story about lesbians. It’s about as creative as mud. That’s not even getting into the fact that most actually animate better before the end.
You’d expect their final projects to be little more that animatics or animations on 3-4’s shot at a low exposure. I think the “calarts style” moniker is still appropriate.
