I don't have that many finished "portfolio pieces (scripts)" for my first job as a TD, - only 2-3 and they each took me a long time to write and debug - but I know a lot of languages and softwares. The only place hiring near me is AAA. I can't freelance because of the instability and having to do much more complicated taxes. What do I do? Apply anyway or wait? The 2-3 pieces I have are quite strong. Everything else I have has lost its relevance.

Absolutely apply right now, even if you don't get it, you can update your portfolio and try again in a month or two. Unless you literally spam them every day, there's nothing wrong with trying to apply to a studio multiple times as you become better and better.
