The GNU Image Manipulation Program is what most artists and companies use these days. It's capable of advanced things needed for the modern industry, such as multi-channel image support and 16-bit alpha. It can even export as Targa files, for EU5 (!!!). You need a pretty beefy PC with Windows 11, and there's some real shady licensing and DRM. Worth a pirate if you've got 16 gigs of disk space to spare.

The fact that AI will be able to automate every individual phase of the modeling process, assuming it doesn't just leap straight to an end-to-end solution generating models with flawless materials and topology from a text prompt, doesn't give you pause?

What part of the 3d art workflow do you think will be more difficult to solve than, for example, image generation from text prompts or protein folding?

AI is just as completely useless for texturing as photogrammetry. even if it made major breakthroughs (it won't) it would be one of those fads you try once and never implement into your workflow.

Blender isn't that bad. If you can't take learning blender nodes, some other program isn't going to be magically way easier.

These two work similar to Substance Designer. I prefer the latter, but it's based on a proprietary engine (Unity) unlike the former (Godot), if that matters to you. Both open source aside from that.

It's not completely useless, but the only benefit is that I can instantly find the kind of image I'm looking for by searching tags on my computer since an AI website allowed me to scrape 200k images from their site before I got rate limited, and also to not have to worry about the licensing if the image. I would never use a bare AI image in a project because they look like shit, but when I'm feeding images into a long pipeline where they get warped and filtered a lot, the end result looks the same.
