I need to get into the game industry. Should
I focus on unity or unreal?

I have a 12900k and a 3060 12gb. I cant upgrade to a 40 series at this time.

I figure I need to create and import character animations and then build them up with in game vfx and control them with button presses.

Unreal for AAA development (high salaries, harder to get into)
Unity for AA development (lower salaries on average but way more jobs, so it's easier to get into)

The correct answer is you should use both
Firstly: you skills that make you valuable have nothing to do with the software. It's your ability to design and produce efficiently and creatively that's important
Secondly: a time will come when you're required to step outside of your comfort zone and use software you're not familiar with. you'll need to be able to quickly adapt or otherwise have been already familiar with it.

The world is doomed when all the pre-zoomers rather get inside the game industry than any other industry more essential than playing vidya games.
