Why is modeling a structure like pic related so hard to do with good topology? Did I get filtered? It's essentially a dome with 4 sides chopped off. But still. Can you do it?

Here's one way that may give some ideas how to approach stuff like that.

And if it needs to be higher resolution I would approach that similarly but work out some support geo.

This doesn't seem to be exactly right. The center is higher than the top of the arch.

had a hell of a time modelling these vaulted ceilings for a past project while maintaining modularity for the rest of the environment, this video follows a similar process to the one i ended up using for the main structure: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jRsoVJb3ids&t=186s

then i gave up and hacked together a model for the vaults as a base to be dynameshed/sculpted and then manually retopoed in maya, baked the maps and just crashed the separate models together

hope that helps anon

Yeah you're getting filtered. There's a reason people go to school for this. Oh wait the youtubers and internet schizos gave you the false idea that you can really self teach yourself anything? HAH, subscribe for more content.

Yeah, you got filtered.

You should approach this as it was constructed irl, it appears to be a dome, but it isn't, a dome is constructed like an igloo, it keeps a circular horizontal section that changes size as it goes up.

This kind of vaults were constructed in a specific order, arches of the four sides first, arches that cross at the center second, then the surfaces that connect them all last, which are in themselves arched, from the outside it looks more like an orange, not a sphere.

It's more pronounced in gothic architecture, look for rib vault photos, you're trying to make a groin vault which is different in geometry.

No good examples online, so here's a more useful pic

To the left: bitch groin vault done by intersecting two half cylinders

To the right: half point rib vault, the sails (space between arches) should be modelled by mantaining the curvature of the arches that are to the sides, I'm too lazy to do that part, but it isn't that hard once you've got the main structure
