Blender zoomer (22, pls no ban) here. This image was made some time in the 90s and I was curious as to what the creation process would have looked like.
What software(s) would have been used?
Where could I download such software? Is it free like my precious Blender?
What would the workflow look like?
Do you know of any retro learning resources I could use?

I know a few of you are old and have the answers Iโ€™m looking for.

There's no way to tell what has been used to create your picture and besides you don't need to use ancient software to replicate that.
If you have to max has been around since the 90s and would most likely be the software anyone was using.
Anyway to illustrate my point:
Use eevee, only point lights and replace all Principled BSDFs with glossy BSDFs to replicate that look in blender.
Black background in world of course.

The only reason you should ever want to do this is if you're a boomer looking for that dopamine hit of nostalgia. As a zoomer, you should not do this. It's autismal and a waste of time. Learn modern software with modern workflows. Don't get distracted on autistic projects.

Likely made in 3DS Max if I had to guess. If you want to replicate the look of that image you could just as easily use Blender. Just keep the texture resolution low and the lighting and shading flatter.

all it needs now is a bit of compression and pixelization
