What differentiates OpenUSD from basic bitch USD? Got this email today, from big Marmo, wanting me to update the app to support OpenUSD.

It's just a standard to make sure every USD implementation will look the same everywhere. Standard USD is just to exchange scene data but makes no guarantees when it comes to procedural materials, lights, colorspaces and things like that.

I am stuck on Maya 2023 because of my pipeline tools. OpenUSD is irrelevant in 23, no?

Are these supposed to be the same? Marmoset has less ambient occlusion. Unreal has more specular.

Meh close enough. Might just be the difference in rendering engines.
>OpenUSD
If that also supports rigged meshes that would be a huge win.

USD in Maya works only if You use Arnold/Vray.
or if You have inhouse engineering tool for a bridge to Your renderer.

Ironically I use prman in maya, by Pixar, creators of USD as well as Cycles in Blender for quicker but less realistic renders

Of course they will look different? PBR is an approximation of real life, and different rendering engineers will approach that differently. The point is they are all using the same exact data to approach that problem with. If anything it's surprising that they look so similar when realtime and offline renderers used to look so distinct from one another

There's no difference at all, it's just re-brand. Probably in part because searching for "USD" turns up buttloads of results for the U.S. Dollar, and also to drive home the open source part and better align with the likes of Open Color IO, OpenEXR, OpenWhathaveyou.

I hear that USD only works if you're using some awful LookDevX workflow, which is truly god awful

let me guess:
>imports USD into maya as normal meshes not USD stages
Whenever I wanted to do USD stages in Maya ,PRMan does not work.
