been learning to use World Machine to export tiled landscape into Cinema 4D...

but it becomes quite demanding memory wise to load it up

There's probably much better free software now but I used to generate heightmaps for Cities Skylines with a software called Wilbur.
Import a rough handmade gray scale heightmap, then fiddle around with the erosion filters and there you go, decent terrain.

Why would you need to make a large scale world if the project doesn't require one? You're creating unnecessary work for yourself.
