Curious, why is this board so dead?
Isn't 3d exciting?

Because you constantly spam all over it instead of staying in your own thread like you're supposed to, Cris.

Yeah, I don't get it. /ic/ is arguably more niche than 3D nowadays but it's a hundred times more active.

well /ic/ is a red board so it's full of coomers and horndogs 24/7. It's halfway demoralizing seeing that 99% of the people there are being guided by their smaller head. Halfway confidence-boosting, though, considering that means I'm better than 99% of them.

Nah no way, a lot of people watch entry level tutorials nowadays sure, but they get filtered the moment they have to do something on their own. There is also a giant amount of people who are saying "I will learn blender tommorow!" then spend a month making the fucking donut and drop 3d later

Mostly because of the people that already populate /3/
The culture and behavior coupled with the lack of anything valuable ensues that no one will ever come here
>>972780
This is also a factor. This anon's shameless display of unearned superiority also illustrates my first point

Almost me.
Spent an afternoon doing half of the donut tutorial then put 3d on hold for half a year. Youtube algorithm slowly sprinkled in some blender tutorials more specialised for my interests that entire time that I collected in a playlist. When I finally got around to it again I had a great base from the basics from my donut and a heap of research material to let me blast off.

I've been enjoying checking in on the cris blogs but this board has an extreme lack of interesting or useful threads compared to similar boards.

I pop in once in a blue moon, well every beginning of each month. Nothing really worthy to talk about since some threads will always have a bunch of faggots going "MAYA IS BETTER THAN BLENDER" or "BLENDER IS BETTER THAN MAYA" vice-versa pissing matches. Really not the best place to discuss Houdini since hardly anyone on here uses it, not like it matters anymore since I switched to Blender.

Niggas actually get filtered once they have to learn everything required to work on a 3d environment. Its 3times as hard as drawing coomershit on photoshop. Also 3d requires a decent computer, something most anons do not have.
By the way, Im studying topology these days and Im getting frustrated with my results. Does anyone has a site where I can download retopologized models to study them on blender for free? Looking for both gaming and movie results

3D will always be less popular than 2D because of its more technical nature, it isn't as straightforward as 2D and has a lot of shit you gotta keep in mind to make something that's even passable: with 2D if you shittily draw something it can even be charming depending on your style and subject, but 3D isn't so forgiving, it's much easier to fuck up your execution with 3D, hell 3D actually has a threshold of technical knowledge you must have to even begin creating shit, with 2D on the other hand all you need are a pencil and some paper.
That said, 3D has advantages, my favourite being that once you've suffered through the pain of creating an object (modeling, texturing, rigging, animation, the whole shebang) you can reuse it anywhere and any amount of times you want, that's so cool.
Lastly, there's a purely demographic aspect to it I suspect, in age and sex.
First of all there's a higher cerebral barrier of entry, younger folks' brains aren't fully developed and therefore it'll be generally harder for them to access 3D.
As for sex, have you ever seen a girl 3D artist? I don't mean trannies, I'm talking real vaginas. I'm sure you know of some exceptions, but 3D seems to be dude dominated, girls seem to have a much greater preference for 2D instead and in fact many illustrators are female, I'd say 2D has a roughly balanced male:female ratio, the same cannot be said about 3D. Thus, if only one of the sexes engages in 3D, that means less people involved in it overall.
Now for that one insecure cretin who'll inevitably came crawling out of the woodwork to bitch at me for implying guys are smarter than girls, that's not what I'm implying at all, rather I'm aknowledging the two sexes have different tastes, nothing more, nothing less.

Lastly lastly, 2D has been around since the dawn of man, 3D has been around for, what, 40 years? Though strides have been made to make the subject more approachable, there's probably still much that can be done and we have yet to discover in order to make 3D easier and more intuitive to work with. Like think of 70s computers and how the mere invention of the mouse made comp-sci feel that much more natural for a human being to get behind, before the subject may have seemed too arduous but by making working with computers easier it has attracted more people than it otherwise ever would have. Virtual reality 3D modeling is an example of the efforts being made in this sector, it's only a matter of time before someone nails it and makes the whole 3D process a breeze

>it's only a matter of time before someone nails it and makes the whole 3D process a breeze
I'm saying in general, doesn't have to be virtual reality 3D modeling, it can be anything, something that has yet to see the light of day

>drawing is more entry level friendly than learning a program
>pick up a pencil

>post it
>rinse repeat
>3d software
>Gotta learn how to use it first
>Sit through long tutorials of some youtuber who won't shut up with their inbetween jokes and other nonsense and it's just a slog to get through it
Also, people just like to shitpost half the time on /ic/, and most people have drawn something, BUT, most people haven't fiddle with 3d software and have no idea where to start or even want to start as it is very intimidating to get into.
>>972782
>"I will learn blender tomorrow!"
This is probably the biggest filter in general. Even beginning to begin with is a hard step for most people and then the consistency to continue at it over time from there.

I blame the ridiculous pricing on 3d software it is anti-newbie. For 3d modeling/sculpting you have 1 free option for texturing you have 0.

Pretty much this. There are simply way too many hurdles to get through compared to drawing. I bet you a lot of people that got into 3d already had a lot of technical knowledge beforehand with computers in general. At least, compared to the average Joe who only have used it for light internet surfing.

With blender alone you can do those 3things, I am not talking about the quality of mari and Zbrush but you can and it's free, so no excuses. pricing is free, and there's tons of films made exclusively with blender
