Thanks! I have a strong 2d background so treating it almost like an illustration in how a stack layers tends to get me very far. Multiply for layers of shadows and overlay for highlights (always working in masks, nondestructively). It's an approximation of the 'proper' substance workflow but with only PS and a blender plugin that syncs files on every save. The design was just a mix of references

I honestly don't think seeing my workflow would be very useful because what carries the model is just painting/drawing, it's 2d really as opposed to 3d. At what point do you cross the line from low poly to mid poly? Is there some kind of consensus on vertex count that increases as the power of your average PC increases, or is it more of a design philosophy where you don't use subdiv modifiers and try to use as few vertexes as you can get away with.

For animation. The model wireframe loops that go around the elbows, knees have to be a certain way so that when the model is animated, it deforms nicely. "low poly" is a relative term to describe the mesh that you bake the details onto from the "high poly" mesh. It can be 5k and 150k depending on the project and artstyle.
"midpoly" is a type of mesh where you don't really bake anything and rely on manipulating vertex normals to achieve a desired shading result.

Oh. I'm barely literate when it comes to texturing. I just know a thing or two about pixel art. I can't really help you with that, because it comes from years of trial and error self-teaching. Getting a bit of help here, a bit of help there. It's all random. I'm a 2D artist venturing into 3D. So I know some 2D art tricks. That's all. I didn't even do much really. Edits are always easier than laying down the ground work.
I basically use a pirated version of photoshop to do pixel art. There's a few tricks there.
1. Somewhere in the options is a way to turn off the pixel grid when you zoom in. That thing is annoying. Turn it off. Not to be confused with the grid you set up for guides. But that single pixel grid eyesore.
2. Set magic wand to 0 tolerance, disable anti aliasing, and disable contiguous. This will allow you to select 1 specific color. Good for making sure you don't have stray colors hiding anywhere. Or just selecting an area you want to work inside of.
3. Set paint bucket to 0 tolerance, disable anti aliasing, and disable contiguous. Now you can change colors in a single click, no matter where they are.

you could do that trivially by animating a uv offset (either directly or through a material parameter)
you can hover over any shader parameter and press I to insert a keyframe

And my first ever attempt to mark seams for UV unwrapping, not as bad as I thought, plan is to get this girl textured and rigged up and then iterate to higher poly counts and eventually will touch retopo

And my first successful UV mask and texture made with 5000 hours of GIMP, had to repeatedly unwrap and fiddle about to get the UV islands to work, now I have the workflow down I should be able to refine my process to produce an actually good output, my next update will include hair and a textured face.
