Got a nasty message from autodesk on my computer accusing me of using a priated version of maya. like, i opened maya and another program opened uo a new window with spooky red text and threats. a corporation has altered data on my computer to threaten me.
is there info on this? how real is this thing?
pic related is who is why autodesk has suddenly decided its necessary and ok to do this.

i googled it and i dont see any screenshots of this message. so now im thinking its just fucking spyware. it had very distinct graphics. not a typical maya text box popup

Yeah it's too weird. If they somehow infused antiquated versions of maya on every computer with this nasty message it would be a global story. There'd already be lawsuits from studios that run on pirated software saying it's not fair to spy on them.
If it IS spyware though then there are no gloves and it could fuck my shit up however it wants. I got ransomeware'd a few years ago and luckily it didn't know what a .ma file was. Thousand of jpegs got borked. If a smarter version knows to fuck with my models then I am legit concerned.

Well there ya go.
You're computer illiterate and you got infected again. I bet you're even one of those tards who had their discord or other faggy social media "hacked".

they only go after studios and indies who earn a fortune
basically those they can extort for thousands and millions of dollars
if you're using it for personal projects or to learn the software then they won't come after you unless they wanted to make an example out of you

So I ventured to open maya again. Got the little nasty gram again. I opened up the task manager and tracked down the exe that generates the window. I deleted it and now maya won't open at all. Trying to reinstall it again and im gonna see.

First that’s the old UI so somewhere in 2020-2022 and second the pirate version you have is a scam with viruses. Also don’t install older versions because they are easily compromised.

the newer versions are compromised by autodesk themselves. I installed this years ago. it's 2018. Never had something like this happen. It's nuts.
Otherwise, I've been on my "2nd warning" for several successful maya start ups now. I blocked this app through the firewall and stopped their faggy desktop app from starting at start up.

Imagine going to all this trouble, and risking your PC and data with sketchy cracks, potentially costing you thousands in worst case scenarios, just to save around 30$ per month. If you can't afford that much, just use blender like the rest.

You can get an indie license for roughly 300$ per year, if your revenue is under 100k. It's identical to the full cost one in every other way. I'm honestly jealous, considering I needed to pay the full price when I was still under 100k revenue. The moment I went over, they released this thing as an option.

yeah and ingoogled this thing and got no results. if everyone were getting these populs itd be all over the place and itnisnt. so im not super convinced its legit. task manager identifies the window as a "chromium app". the exe is embedded in a labyrinth of folders. when i delete it maya doesnt open.
>>995810
ill look into it. im not obstinently against paying for it but after 18 years of 3d modelling my revenue is $0.

If you don't use it commercially, there's ways to get a student license for free, or so I've heard at least. But if you're only doing 3D modelling, there's honestly no reason to use Maya over anything else. It is considered its weakest area, and you'd honestly probably be either equally or better off with almost any other of the popular 3d packages. Maya's strengths are in Animation and Rigging, although it has good retopo and uv tools as well.

The power of industry standard.
Still, jokes aside, least he had the cash to actually drop on this shit (at the drop of a hat no less). Which is more than can be said about 90% of this board.

Ehemm I just wanted to share for everyone's amusement. After 5 days of buying maya, which is $0.83, I have made 0 models.
It's just wonderful that now I can assign monetary value to my procrastination.

I doubt it. Just like I doubt The Foundry actually sends threatening emails to random people.
You more likely had some spyware from whoever cracked the software and he's trying to scam some money out of you

Did you block maya in your firewall? You're supposed to block everything you pirate. Is this your first time?

Did you block it in the firewall? If you block it in the firewall it can't phone home so you're safe. If you ask whether it has viruses, I don't know.

then you have no issues. The software is not Gona send a carrier pigeon to autodesk to report you. Also autodesk doesn't care
