It depends what you're doing, but if you have a patreon page or something similar, popularity on social media platforms directly translates to paying customers which equals your income, as long as your content is solid of course. Not 1:1 of course, not even close. Popular content gets pushed to the front pagges, gets retweeted, reposted and so on, which puts it in front of the viewer. People can't buy your content, if they don't know you exist after all.

NTA, but It's incredibly simple for anyone with decent 3D skills, to reach 50000$ per year on patreon. Even 100k isn't too hard to reach if you know what you're doing. The statistics are horribly skewed downwards, since 99% of the creators on these services don't know how to advertise, or if they do, their content is just not appealing to anyone.

Your loss. For me, dropping out of my soul crushing small studio job of doing shitty unambitious animations for kids, was the best decision of my life. My work hours are now 1/4th of the amount I worked as an employee, while my income has tripled. And while I do need to do porn, I at least have complete freedom over it, to experiment with different things as much as I want, and to create something I can call my own, even if it's just porn.

nta but tiktok and any other kind of short form content is bad because it actively reduces your attention span from excessive use. said excessive use is maximized by algorithms that are trained to keep your attention span for as long as possible.

People say this, but it's not entirely true. Tiktok can take your time, but it's pretty much a replacement for other forms of entertainment. So it's not taking any more time than you were willing to give away in the first place. Much like how like a video game can suck away hours of your time if you let. But unlike a video game, you're getting stimulated by much more. An average scroll through tiktok can feed you comedy videos, drama videos, book reviews, current news, an interesting thought experiment, girls dancing in bikinis, an SNL sketch, interesting showcases for math. And yes, even Blender tutorials. There's pretty much every topic of interest there. So after an hour of "doom scrolling"(that's what they call it) you've at least had better information fed to you than watching two episodes of whatever is on TV.

But also, you don't have to *use* is, in order to use it. You know what I mean? You don't have to be a consumer to be a creator. You can post your work there and leave. check back the next day, like some of the comments you received(it stimulates engagement) and then leave again.

If you feel like you're the type to fall into excessive use, then set screen time limits. Tiktok has the option to set up limits that notify you when you're over your allotted time. It still requires some self control on your part, but it's better than nothing, right? That's ultimately what it comes down to: self regulation. Same with anything. Don't want to get fat? Self regulate your meals. Don't want get drunk? Self regulate your drinking.

A lot of people will say tiktok is harmful to their attention span, but then they're watching 4 hour video essays on youtube with every meal, and then chasing their meal with zyns and turning on fortnite, while the essay is on the background.

shortform content has demonstrably proven to harm attention spans because it shows so much in such a short amount of time.
to your point of it showing a lot of information i would like to say that all that information is useless if its never applied which i think for 99% of people they put any "useful information" in a save folder and forget about it a minute later.
while i also agree that it is up to the consumer to control themselves and that other forms of entertainment arent good either in excess use, short form content is so much more addicting and destructive to the brain comparatively it would be dishonest to completely blame the consumer for lacking self control when most probably got hooked without realizing the full ramifications of its usage.
i do also agree with your point to just using it to post stuff and nothing more

"Demonstrably"? I haven't seen it demonstrated. A lot of people make the claim that it does, but have no proof. It's also the same argument that old people used to make about Television back in the day.
You didn't draw the line at TV
You didn't draw the line at newgrounds
You didn't draw the line at YTMND
You didn't draw the line at Youtube
You didn't draw the line at Vine
But tiktok? Well now that's just too far. But why? The content is not *that* much shorter. Vine and YTMND were shorter than tiktok. The flash videos on newgrounds were longer or shorter depending on what you watched. I remember visiting /f/, and a lot of videos there were short loops. Youtube used to be a lot shorter before their algorithm started promoting 10 minute videos.

And let's not forget 4chan itself. If you browse a fast board like /v/ or /pol/, you're getting constant dopamine hits. This site works like a skinner's box. You get a little taste of half decent content here, and then you spend the next few hours chasing that dragon. Refreshing, and thread hopping, seeking the stimulation you got before. People will really spend 8+ hours on 4chan a day, and then say "I can't do tiktok, because muh attention spam". Bruh, tiktok is going to be your stepping stone to recovery from THIS place. The less time you spend here, the better.

As for whether information is applicable or not. Again, it's primarily entertainment. You don't watch fucking Invincible for applicable skills on how to become a superhero. That's such a "why do I have to learn math I'll never use?" opinion. Like, sure, in most of your life, you won't need higher level math, but it's still a healthy stimulation for your brain. Yesterday I learned how to do some hamstring stretches. Today I learned how to properly draw a donut. The other week, I saw a video about game theory and the prisoner's dilemma that actually changed the way I think.(not the youtube show)

not really, going to tiktokt to upload your videos must take like 1 or 2 minutes, it doesn't require you to browse videos and interact with other people

the only actually valid point ITT, but I'd still rather not. I'm already on yt shorts and have seen mild success there. Tiktok counts a view every time someone scrolls past you. that view is worthless; they won't engage at all. youtube isn't that much better but it at least requires SOME watchtime to be counted as a view. if nothing else, I get a better feel for what people like and don't like.

I mean I just wrote two detailed posts explaining why it's safe to use. Ironic that the same people complaining about how detrimental the site is to their attention spans, can't be bothered to read a few 4chan posts.

>>997784
>that view is worthless; they won't engage at all
You're making the mistake a lot of artists make. Where they only post on gallery sites like deviantart, newgrounds, and artstation. While Poo-pooing social sites like tumblr and twitter. And I'll just say it. You're being pretentious. You want to give your art this higher meaning than what it is. Which it to look at and go "huh... nice". That's it. The thing is, the social sights are going to do way more at propagating your art than the gallery sites. So if you actually want to grow like the OP is asking, then don't be a snob. Use the social sites. Get your name out more rapidly.
