>how did you go about story boarding it?
If i am being honest, it went somewhat backward, i first did a basic version of the animation which i used as reference and then near the end of it i decided to do the animatic of the ending (pic related is the entire thin).
afterwards i went and animate everything, this entire thing was an excuse to learn flash and as you can see from the inconsistent brushes.

inspirational stuff
i usually struggle with quick and snappy action
i always end up doing slower longer shots
it's real difficult to be able to compress that much movement and action into such littler time while nnot losing meaning
good stuff
even if your drawing could use a bit of work i'd say you're an accomplished animation director already : DDD

Here is another one, this time follows a effective system, it feels slightly rushed, but mostly because by the end of it i kind of just wanted to finish it, that being said this is closer to my skill level as of now!
as for help on for snappy action, Exagerate the Movement, Smear frames indicate Really fast as fuck speed and as such you barelly see it, (Maybe 2 frames at most if you use 24 fps).
make the destination of something from A to B overshoot
Pic related is should help you, it's a tutorial on how to animate centered weapons in doom, but this should also teach you how to implement it in other stuff too.

I need to gush about how cool your transitions are
the smoothe arching movement of the character and that fade out end looks soo cool
how do you go about animating these anon?
do you draw/plan the key frames first or do you animate frame to frame?
Anonymous at Sun, 20 Feb 2022 16:20:46 UTC No. 677394
>>677373
It's pretty much all straight ahead, no keys. I've come to the conclusion that 99% of all great sakuga is animated straight ahead so I'm just trying to get better at it. Sometimes I add inbetweens if the timing is too fast (the momentum of stuff with secondary motion starts looking fucked when I do that though). Now the fade in there was done last just tracing the first frame.
I learned quite a bit by messing around animating balls moving in non-ball-like ways, a character is pretty much a ball.

every walk cycle is actually just half a cycle wherein in the first half is simply mirrored for the opposite leg/arm etc
hence when making a walk cycle one need only make one half and simple copy and edit frames from said half into the corresponding opposite atleast in principle
hence whe get a sweert smooth symmetrical walk cycle wherein the left step is just as good as the right step and it all merges into a perfect walk cycle
now this, in a software like motorpen with minimal features for frame placement editing i must somehow keep track of all the frames (and their corresponding opposites/mirrored versions) in one way or the other
Hence i opt for the easy to spot and visually distinct symbols on the top right, there's no particular order for the symbols themselves they just help keep track of the unique frames and their mirrors so if i ever deem a frame unncessary i can then get rid of its corresponding mirror too as i give it the same symbol in the top right
if you wish to see the symbol sequence in order you can decrease the webm speed in the options at the bottom right and put it down to x0.25 speed, then you can witness how the sequence on lasts halfway through and repeats itself
hope this needlessly word post was informative about my personal rather childish practice : DDDD

Random question for a thread like this. I wanna get my like 7 year into drawing shit. Whats better as a basic introduction? Getting a bespoke animation tool like toon boom and get him use to the that stuff early? or just use powerpoint a super simplified interface for him to make simple storyboarded storys with minimal animation?
Eitherway he's not got a drawing so he'd just be dragging and dropping pngs and filling in the blanks speech bubbles.

leave drawing material around the house
be seen drawing around them (kids tend to mimic people around them)
praise them everytime they draw
show them lots of cool animated movies and shows
build a nice rapport with them
display their drawings on the fridge and be proud of them
this way first kindle a passion for drawing
animation comes waaaaaay down the line
unless the kid really really admires you they'll think you're a lame adult pushing lame chores on them
you cannot artificially force them into animation without also forming a deep aversion from animation into them
like how we hated homework back in the day even if we had to do it
the best you can do is form a suitable environment and pray for the best
remember dont make them your enemy over this you wont win in the long run
as for the software use something simple for starters maybe start with making flipbooks
toonboom is an industry grade software which most adult struggle to grasp completely let alone a child
atleast let them each 15~18 before even bringing up proper animation at all

Oh no he wants to make a "cartoon". He asked me and I thought I might as well do a short term plan to get a cheap product.
Thing is he's got a big concept but like I know he doesn't have the attention span to right out the entire story start to end. Was thinking I just let him make like a powerpoint presentation with clip art images. Just so he gets a baseline understanding of drawing storyboards to final (crude) project. He's already got the story, wrote it out and now got like a 6 panel storyboard.
I think I'll take your advice with the flipbook thing if i don't just use power point. thanks

flipbooks, drawing individual frames on a normal program/paper and putting them together via a gif maker, stopmotion, flipaclip - really simple stuff like that would probably be a much better introduction to animation than introducing your kid to powerpoint animation (inconvenient and difficult) or an industry-grade animation program (too complicated)
introduce him to animation through something he's familiar with and finds fun, and if that inspires him to try work on bigger and bigger projects then you can try to introduce him to programs that, in essence, are built to make those things much easier via more complicated means
