I took a 1 unit swimming class in college and our instructor was this australian blonde with a perfect curvy body. she had the perfect amount of extra fat in all the right places. she wasn't fat at all but she had an streamlined hourglass figure. All swimmers competing at a high level are lean and very tall. That being said, extreme distance open water swimming (e.g. the English Channel) is probably a different matter.
