๐งต What are some /sci/-approved ways to remain productive?
Anonymous at Wed, 6 Mar 2024 22:57:39 UTC No. 16060486
I'm a college student and I have a really hard time getting to work and studying consistently. I probably have ADHD but I don't want to waste my hard-earned money on a psychiatrist for a useless diagnostic. I know people who just take modafinil/ritalin when they need it but I'd rather avoid drugs/medications.
One thing I've noticed is that when people expect me to do something, or when my work is to be directly graded and compared with others, I get very motivated and productive. But alas there's no such competition/camaraderie in college and I'm all by myself. So what usually happens is that I do nothing for 3 months then try to cram an entire semester's worth of classes in seven little days before the exams.
Tl;dr: college student, can't get to work, can't study consistently, what do

You should really challenge that assumption that a comfortable life is value able, that money will bring you ownership and that it can buy things worth consuming.
Character, the quality of handling adversity, isnt built in comfort, and its lack of is the only reason people really desire comfort, vicious cycle.
Money is year 60 into global fiat, i have 5000 years of history books to tell you that by 2030 you'll own nothing and be happy.
try a tomateo from a garden vs one from a store, a loaf of bread made from einkorn in a bread machine vs a store bought loaf, same goes for factory farmed meet if you can hunt. Money can buy you cheap imitations
I'll say to you perhaps you know this subconsicously, which is why your not motivated to rat race.

I don't understand why would it be an useless diagnostic. If you don't want to take meds that's fine (even the most retarded jewish psych will tell you drugs aren't even half of the battle here) but you should discuss it with a pro to figure it out and learn how to cope with your illness (or personality/way of being, I don't want to do the whole debate again)
ADHD isn't automatically lazyness, and vice versa. You might even have a nutritional inbalance which causes the lack of willpower and/or easy exhaustion. It needs to be explored in a way introspection sometimes falls short.

You should google this. There are so many practical methods and you need to try each (reasonable) one to figure out which suits you the best. I will say that's its an actually hard uphill battle to get your shit together, and I'm willing to guess you've never truly put in effort in your entire life to make or accomplish something that's actually hard. The worst part is that it starts gradually until the big changes come. You look after yourself and the smallest of your enviroments and start trekking all the way to tackling hard habits such as intense studying, proper working out, finance management, etc.
And even so, you might fail permanently at any stage of the process. You might even die. So figure out who you are and what do you really want first

I have a similar problem (special interests related avoidant behavior).
Talking to a psy*chologist* (very much a valid option) has helped me realize this. I have not yet talked about therapy and the solution in my case (related to low interest in my classes) might involve changing my subject.
A bad thing is to be quiet about it to everyone (like me)

>nutritional inbalance
second this. My lack of B12 could have been involved in my unorganized behaviour and maybe even sleep issues in the past.
Learning to cook your own food may be a good way to organize and get a feeling for what you want to eat.
