which tunnel is more structurally safe and will last longer, easier to make etc.

they all have the same amount of force acting on them

Triangle tunnels last longer.

if we assume the floor is always perpendicular to the force of gravity, then I would say 1

Depends entirely on local conditions. Engineering is a clusterfuck, especially in the ground.
>and will last longer
3 creates the largest void and will therefore take the longest to be filled by the elements.
>easier to make etc.
Depends on what you're using to make it. Boring machines dig circular holes, so I'd imagine making 1 or 2 would be a bit of a bitch. If you aren't using specialized machinery, then 1.

Dont know about tunnels but domes for houses are stronger when shaped like a catenary, when they only have to deal with their own shape, assuming they have a constant thickness

If you model the soil pressure like it was a liquid, the ideal shape would be a sphere
If you think there will be more vertical pressure and less horizontal, because soil and rocks are not a liquid, then the ideal shape would be more like a vertical oval

In practice, if you're digging a tunnel by hand it will always tend to make an arched top but have straight vertical sides. It's just the most efficient shape to dig that can still fit a human through. A lot of people start digging with a nice shape or size in mind, but it's such hard work that everybody ends up converging on the laziest solution.

If we assume they're in a vacuum then 1 is the safest, 3 will last the longest, and 1 is easiest to make.

how do you dig a tunnel in a vacuum?

Nobody said dig. Anyway, I would recommend cold welding.

Use a dust bunny.
