🧵 Is anyone else only in STEM for the money?

Anonymous No. 16066432

Im only in engineering school because its the only thing other than medicine, law or finance that pays a living wage in the 21st century

If you want to get into living, i suggest farming.
If you want to get into waging, i suggest finance.

If you want to yolo save the planet, go into STEM
1945
>As of October 24, 1945, the federal minimum wage in the United States was $0.40 per hour.
>The countries agreed to keep their currencies fixed but adjustable (within a 1 percent band) to the dollar, and the dollar was fixed to gold at $35 an ounce.

>There are about 2,080 working hours in a year for an employee who works a traditional 40-hour workweek.

[math]0.4*2080 = $ 832[/math] per year, or
[math]\frac{$832}{35} = 23.77[/math] ounces of gold per year

2024
>In 2024, the federal minimum wage will increase to $10.50 per hour on July 1, unless the Commonwealth issues a decree changing the amount

>Per Ounce 2,165.11
[math]10.50*2080 = $ 21840[/math] per year, or
[math]\frac{$21840}{2165.11} = 10.08[/math] ounces of gold per year

Reminder that financialization happened
>Physical gold is scarce and cannot be replicated. It's said that the ratio of traded paper gold to physical gold is anywhere from 200 to 250 to 1. Physical gold has been accepted as a form of currency for centuries. However, paper gold cannot be used as currency.

so there is only around 1 ounce of gold for every 200 ounces traded, which artificially depresses the price of gold.

One may be keen to blame 'elites' or something like that, all their 'gains' are in paper though. I prefer to take the view that low hanging fruit is gone. Everyone thought we'd have nuclear powered personal aircrafts by now when they built the suburb/interstate system, crude was always temporary

Nah, I became an MD because I have been enamoured by the black plague since I was a kid. I'm inherently lazy, so it took a long time for me to get here.

>Studying engineering for the money
You're going to be a shitty engineer. If you don't have a genuine interest in being an engineer, you shouldn't go into that field. I've seen it countless times in my cohort, you end up with about 70% of the class who are in it solely for money and struggle because they don't really like the material or are genuinely stupid, a good chunk of which end up working in a totally unrelated field after graduating. Then there's the overachievers, about 20% of the class, who get super high grades and will ace any test, but the second you ask them to actually engineer something they come up with the most retarded solution because they can't do something they haven't studied out of a book. The remaining 10% of students are actually good engineers, they usually get Bs or B+ in their classes, maybe even the odd C, but they can think intuitively, are better problem solvers, and are able to not just regurgitate facts or formulas they learned, but apply abstract concepts to a practical problem.

No, I'm doing a Ph.D in math and already have accepted I'm going to die poor unironically but I can't see myself doing anything else.

owning a business is less work and more money than wageslaving for shampoo companies. requires a decent level of intellect to do successfully though, unlike jumping through hoops in college, which it has been proven women and indians are capable of doing.

I did a PhD in Math for the love of the subject. 10 years after graduating, I’m kinda glad I did it except all work for mathematicians serves Jews in some crooked antisocial way. So, like, the money is great but now that I have enough money (not insane amounts but enough) I kinda wish I did something where I would be helping actual people like medicine

I'm in medical school
I wouldn't say just for the money. But if there wasn't riches at the other end I would definitely do something else.
~65% of my class are women, they do it because of the lifestyle it will provide them: In their 30s, married with 2-3 kids working part time.
The profession can be very flexible and still brings a very good wage. This is why it's so appealing to women.
Even if they really like the profession which I think most do, the lifestyle is really the maindriver on why waisting your 20s studying.
Being an MD as a woman also ensures getting a high value man as well.
Basically you sacrifice your 20s, but guarantee a great lifestyle for your 30s and onward.

For men, it's a lot more of the respect/honor, a lot of very smart individual who have a passion for the sciences of the profession. But most importantly like all other professions, it's a guarantee of money, not lifestyle though like women.
It's kind of weird, as the profession has shifted from a male dominated space to a female one.
Advertisement is intended for women, it's a lot less general for men's intention to say despite what I've listed.
Since there's no obvious reason except preferences between Med, Eng or Finances for a male student to choose.

The gender disparity is problematic societally though. The government spending money to educate its next generation of practicing doctors is pumping most of its money into stocks with much less value: women(this isn't sexist)

Most Women will work part time, halving the possible value we could get out of the investment
The Women who become doctors, will have spent their 20s in the books instead of starting families. We are funding women to reduce family numbers.
This is particularly a problem, when the government instates Numerus Clausus(limited numbers of people who can become doctors) and we have medical deserts.

Yh I didn't want to write too much, but yes.
Women that can't marry or more like not incentivized to marry will whore out, especially if they are wasting 10/15 years.
From the age of 16 when you should start looking to get married as a woman to the age of around 30 you do nothing but study, these women will definitely whore out.
Nurses that already only study 3/4 years have a massive promiscuous culture, it naturally extends to the female practitioners as well, though I'd imagine to a lesser degree.

Lmao, what a load of pretentious horseshit. Imagine being such an elitist f*ggot that you think only 10% of engineering students are "real engineers". Get the fuck over yourself, you gatekeeping dweeb.

Who gives a flying fuck if people go into engineering for the money? Not everyone has to cream their pants over differential equations to be a good engineer. Maybe pull your head out of your ass and realize there's more to being an engineer than jerking off to textbooks, you absolute brainlet.

So what if the book-smart kids can't MacGyver some autistic Rube Goldberg contraption out of paperclips and dog shit? Doesn't mean they won't be damn good at designing bridges that don't fucking collapse. And even the kids struggling through classes could still end up contributing more to the field than your bitch ass ever will.

TL;DR - Fuck off with your sanctimonious hot take, you pseudo-intellectual douchewagon. There's no One True Way™ to be an engineer, so take your purity testing bullshit and shove it up your smug puckered asshole.
