What are the evolutionary benefits of hair balding? Why does it happen?

None. It's an accident that aesthetics play such a big role in mate selection.

presumably better for hunting to not have hair blocking your vision, hence horseshoe pattern and why it occurs for men.
Also that dude is fat and making a goofy face for dramatic effect, and wasn't good looking with hair either.

Male pattern baldness is associated with higher testosterone so it may just be incidental. Not everything that happens has an immediate and tangible evolutionary benefit. That's a midwit understanding of the concept.

my schizo theory is that balding reveals cranial shape/size. cultures would put together that those with large round heads were smarter/more attractive, thus reproduce more.
Also consider that most people dont go full bald ultill late 20's at the earliest.
Full bald = intelligent and strong man

Zero understanding how natty selection works.
Such minor benefits are not selected for, and to insult to injury any sapient species like pre-humans can just cut off the hair.
