𧡠Programmable synthetic cells
Anonymous at Wed, 13 Mar 2024 00:28:32 UTC No. 16071052
How far are we from creating programmable synthetic cells?
They will be similar to biological cells, the only difference is that their memory/DNA can be reconfigured at any time.
Think of the microbots from big hero 6 but with the additional advantage of being able to duplicate themselves and create any object/substance possible as long as they have access to the required materials and energy for it.
Future robots will most likely be entirely made out of these cells.

Eh. His research was to tackle this subject, mostly from the cell up, but talks about Synthetic Biology often.

For from atom to cell I would suggest Dr.Tour on Sythenic Biology/Chemistry.

Nah, other directions look far more promising. Levin does work for "programming" cells as his approach is computational in nature but...well, you'll have to research his works to understand it. It just goes in different directions than previous generations predicted.

already done, just use a viral vector to reconfigure their dna

Last I heard that was a flat "Never been done."

Probably the confusion is from people using words like "Synthetic" when they meant GMO. Even Michael Levin had to call them "xenobots" because its the term people use, which is just from skin cells formed into a cell (which tries to perform functions on its own).

So in summation, it wont be used how you describe it for a looong time, let alone for reasons noted below. Everything Ive seen from Levin points to signal treatments as a regenetive therapy, using your own biology to heal you instead of external drugs/gene therapy.

No need for 'BioMed Frankencells'.
