There's not much hope for them to develop intelligence in the absence of humans, as they are limited to their little continent. I have heard that disregarding primates, elephants have the best chance to develop humanlike intelligence if mankind goes extinct. But I disagree. I think bears are more likely to make the new man they just need to become less bloodthirsty, disregarding primates of course.
