Peak midwit. Complex numbers pop up because representation theory over the field of complex numbers is much simpler than that over the reals. For example, the Lorentz group decomposes into SU(2)xSU(2) with a much simpler Lie bracket. You can always project results onto real representations, in fact you must due to Hermiticity of observables.
