Once upon a time there was a retard that existed. One day, he decided he wanted to blow up Mars because why not? So he snuck into a military base and with his retard strength stole a giant super laser gun and took it home. Then he aimed the gun at Mars, mashed a bunch of buttons to power it up and then fired it. The laser succesfully hit Mars! Except it wasn't Mars, the retard accidentally aimed it at the moon, and now the moon was completely decimated and blown to billions of bits.

In this hypothetical scenario, what would happen to the earth? Would the ocean start taking over the land and drowning everyone in the process?

Yes. Currently the moon and its tidal suppression (think wine glass swirling motions but for the earth inverted) allow us to live on the land surfaces. The moon keeps near three times the amount of energy generated by surface oceans underneath the Earths outer crust. If the moon was destroyed there would be ventricular gyro in the Earths core, and the ocean energy and the water underneath the crust would start to seep through to the surface. This would be seen in the form of hurricanes, floods, tsunamis, earthquakes. If you want to go one step further, new volcanos would form around the world wherever plate lines were located, and Yellowstone and other volcanos would be sure to erupt.
