🗑️ 🧵 How do I convince my father a Mobius strip has only one side?
Anonymous at Sat, 23 Mar 2024 21:49:14 UTC No. 16093245
I made a paper model and used a pencil trip trace a path around it but he's still adamant it has two sides and two edges

Why would you argue with a retarded boomer? Just tell him he's right and let him pay for your rent.

it's like a metaphorical mobius strip. he told you he's right, you came here telling us he's wrong, and you arrive back at him acknowledging he's right.

You make a game out of it. Draw a bear on the strip and tell him that he has to draw a deer that has to hide from the bear. If there are two sides he can draw the deer on the opposite side of the strip. If there is only one side then you can always draw a path that the bear can take where it can catch the deer. Do this with both a mobeus strip and a regular ring of paper.

have your dad draw a parallel line in the middle on the whole strip until it meets itself. cut the strip and show him he drew only on one side. he'll hate you for it, do it.

Paper ring. Cut it along its midline.
Two separate rings.
Paper Mobius strip. Cut along its midline.
Two joined rings.
If you can’t make him understand it, just show him something cool you can do with it.

once you cut the strip, his line will be on both sides of the cut strip...
Anonymous at Sat, 23 Mar 2024 23:20:32 UTC No. 16093381
It does have 2 sides though. An inside and an outside.

DESU it's a matter of definition what a "side" is.
Does a torus only have one side?
When you clearly can define the inside and outside of it (path going through the hole vs. going to the side of the torus)?
Maybe your father simply interprets the problem differently.
And his interpretation is still valid, but maybe not as mathematically useful as the commonly used one.

idk here is a list:
1st try to exploain topology to him
2nd use only complicated terms
3rd talk so long until he falls asleep or he can't make a point anymore
4th and now you won

It doesn't.
"Side" or using a more proper term when it comes to 3D shapes: "face" should be flat and it clearly isn't in the case of a Mobius strip.
Anonymous at Sat, 23 Mar 2024 23:43:41 UTC No. 16093408
but the main problem is that if u have an argument with someone who doesn't even have basic geometrical understanding it is nearly impossible to convine him that your right about some topologicly abstract manyfolds
Anonymous at Sat, 23 Mar 2024 23:51:05 UTC No. 16093414
well, if you can pick something between your fingers, it must have two sides
one sidedness isn't a practical concept in the real world
i understand how the mathematical theoretical concept of a moebius strip has one side, but a practical moebius strip is made out of real life paper with two sides
you can't just glue one side to another side and claim they merged into one
it's like connecting someone's mouth to someone else's anus and claiming it's one digestive tract

>>16093414
your right because if you would "glue" or "cut" an object it is against the rules of topology
it is and always will be an abstract concept

No it's not. Fuck off with that toxic progressive fundamentalist jargon. This is why trust in modern scientists has eroded

your also right because a science studies the structure and behaviour of physical and natural things
and math is an abstract concept

Is this the type of ass that is on /sci/ these days? Do you think that you actually make a mobius strip by twisting a piece of paper together. You have got to be kidding me. Do you think that taking a limit of a number to infinity is actually carrying out infinite steps in a function? Do you really believe signals on a computer are thinking entities?
HAHAHAHAHA. Imbecile.
We pull the results from the void. There are no circles buffoon, no mobius strips, no klein bottles. They only beckon to us from their unspeakable place. I bet you genuinely think your existence is encoded in DNA as well. lmao.
Imagine falling for the brain rot.
