>kardaschev type 2 necessitates a significant space industry in order to move trillions of tons of material between orbits
>this requires mastery and mass production of nuclear fusion or something powerful
>it is assumed that species will use this to build dyson megastructures so they can harness solar power from their star
>when they already have energy production methods far superior to solar power
Why would they bother?

Anonymous No. 16095317

Why not extract the energy directly from the star? Like building solar oil derrick is much easier than using solar panels.

solar is just a very roundabout way of fusion
all this kardaschev civilization shit is just science fiction bullshit anyways and we can't really predict how far-off societies in the future would look anyways

yeah we can, everyone just jumps the shark

Obviously this thread is about The Three Body Problem. Lets be real, if a civilization had the ability to capture a photon, and open it in several dimensions to pack data inside they would be off the planet by then. That ability alone would have allowed them to not only create ships, but even make their own immortal escape pocket dimensions.

they do yes while at the same time being oblivious to disruptive tech they can't wrap their heads around. you can't model what you don't know.

It is a way to scale up socier without having to travel to other star systems.

Why expend energy lifting all that fuel off the star just to put it into a reactor where it'll fuse anyway. Just cheaper to leave it where it is.

Because you can turn any type of atom into another type of atom as long as you have enough power.
Generating power is costly, though. So why not harness power that already exists?
And not only do suns provide power, they also provide materials.

I'm just really really mad we never got to see Half-Life 3's dyson sphere ending

The reddit mentality

A deep dive into why they're like that, excluding the obvious shit like trannies and faggots.
-Optimistic nihilism
(Think Kurzgesagt shit, basically, people who have totally drank the kool aid on the "life has no inherent meaning" lie, while at the same time not roping because they drank the other cup of kool aid telling them that life was supposedly even worse in the past, but if they just keep holding on to the system and being a good bee in the hive, maybe the future might be better than the shitty fucking present that even they can't ignore gnawing at them).
-Bougie consoomer culture
(TL;DR "you can buy happiness with six figures worth of kike tokens": This is the mentality where someone thinks that if one just tows the line and does what the system considers an ideal, he'll be able to heckin' #travel*, and maybe have a loft with exposed brick walls. Because he has no possible comprehension of what actually can bring happiness, the redditor thinks that if he just consooms one more product, does one more hustle, that he'll reach a state of satisfaction. This of course never works, after all, rich celeb sellouts kill themselves at an order of magnitude higher of a rate than joe sixpack).
*The travel part of this never fails to amuse. What do they think they'll see? Don't they know that there's nothing out there anymore? The system has hollowed out anywhere that these dipshits could possibly point to on a map (excluding places they only know about from r/worldnews).

If you were European you would understand.

Of course we can, there are basically two scenarios:
- humanity digitalizes themselves renouncing the physical world and lives in virtual worlds
- humanity does not digitalize themselves(although cyborgs probably will happen) and colonizes space
Dyson swarms are the most efficient way of gathering the energies necessary for both scenarios, so assuming humanity does not commit suicide through deindustrialization they are inevitable.
Artificial nuclear fusion and black hole tech are still not realistic, but Dyson swarms are basically a very durable and simple "low" tech solution that would be already possible, the only challenge is inventing the self-replicating robots necessary to build it.

Conquering space is the ultimate expression of the Faustian spirit, it's the opposite of the decadence reddit represents.
You are confused.
