Did all these animals evolve placental gestation independently or did the placental mammal radiate into all the environments? If its the latter, could it be that mammals have a set of dormant genes that modify them in this number of shapes, which can reemerge if all descendants are allowed to survive? How is it not easier to have the animals develop placental from an equivalent dormant gene individually?
