academic publishing is just the extra pompous wing of the vanity publishing industry, you're insane yourself, if you're not expecting them to be massively egotistical and narcissistic. the world is filled with mentally ill people and academia draws them like flies to shit because academia appeals to their grandiose delusions of intellectual superiority

I avoid making a reference to myself as much as possible when writing, but when absolutely necessary I prefer "we" or "the author" ... using "I" sounds like all the reasons you described

the sentences become cluttered and repetitive. there's only so many ways of writing in passive before you have to add filler words just to break the monotony. writing in passive is harder especially when the author uses passive for both style (instead of saying "i", "we", "the author(s)") and necessity (the subject did a thing itself).

the paper should be easy to read. you're not a retard for getting confused by a paper with poor usage of the passive voice

The royal we is used because it sounds less self absorbed im pretty sure.

Anyways, mathematicians use we, and /sci/ is a math board. If you don't like it then you need to leave. Now. I wont ask again.
