Howdy /sci/
I'm currently somewhere betweeen a Norwood 2 and 3 and it's getting increasingly more difficult to hide my receding hairline. I can get a script for finasteride but it means I will have to visit a hospital and consult with a GP every 3 months because of the stupid laws of my country. I have tried turning myself into an 8 year old Finn but it isn't working (yet). Our customs is quite strict so I doubt I will have much success importing drugs from overseas.
What chemicals and glassware do I need to purchase in order to synthesize finasteride (or dutasteride) by myself? I have a budget of about $2,000 for this task.

I believed in Ray Kurzweil he told me that we would be living in a scientific and technological utopia but if the singularity comes in the 2040s then surely something as simple as hair loss should be treatable in the 2020s.

That doesn't count as balding if you actually are between 2-3. You're probably about a 4 without any crown loss in reality.

I look pretty much exactly as pic related. I don't look as good as a classic NW2 (think Dicaprio) but don't look as bad as a classic NW3 (think Jude Law). NW3 still has a strong forelock but zero temples. I still have a bit left of my temples but it's less compared with just 5 years ago. I'm in my early 30s so am actually probably right in the median in terms of where I should be in terms of hair loss but it still sucks. :(

Law is probably on fin. He has kept his hairline for the most part over the past 15 years (pic related). Law's hairline only looks slightly worse compared with 15 years ago. I would say he has gone from a NW3 to a NW3.5 between the first photo and now.
DiCaprio's hairline is still pretty much intact (NW2). He has a widow's peak which shouldn't be confused with balding. I wouldn't be surprised if he is also on fin.

Also here's another classic example of a NW3. Stephen Collins from 7th Heaven. Strong crown but absent temples are the defining qualities of a NW3.

Here's a better chart than the one you posted. NW1 and NW2 don't count as "balding", it's called a mature hairline, and nearly every male alive will recede at least to somewhere between 1 and 2 by the time they're 30. It's not guaranteed they'll progress past 1/2, which is why it's not considered "balding".
As you can see, Law is at about a 5. The guy you posted is about a 3. Collins isn't a 3, he's a 5.

The only difference between Jude Law/Stephen Collins and someone who isn't bald is that their temples are completely missing. As long as they still have a crown/forelock and no bald spot on the back then they are a NW3.
Law's crown/forelock is slightly creeping up in 2024 pics (pic related) so it makes sense to categorize him as a NW3.5 now. But he was a NW3 for a very long time (probably helped by fin).

Ignore balding on the crown when you determine norwood number. It's highly dependent on individual genetics/finasteride whether you bald on the crown. Some guys will just diffusely thin without hairline recession until they're bald.

Crown is very important when it comes to hiding balding though. Currently my hair looks like pic related. It looks OK when combed forward because the temple recession is hidden by the strong crown. But a gust of wind reveals the temple recession and the illusion falls apart.

I feel like there are two kinds of balders. Diffuse thinners and receders. Prince William (and to a lesser extent Harry) were diffuse thinners who lost hair but retained decent hairlines until the very end. Then you have those who have good volume of hair but with hairlines that recede as they age.

So there are like 3 solutions to hair loss from what I can see:
1) just deal with it and shave it off/become bald monk mode
2) hair transplant
3) hormones, either finasteride or full transition
kinda sucks that there's no like DHT blocker that is topical only and won't spread past the follicles, but desu having hair is so important that I think a lot of people don't care about the feminization

From what I've seen the steroids themselves aren't the problem. In fact since they tend to decrease your natural test production your balding might actually stall when you take roids. The problem is afterwards when you get off them, that's when you start to bald faster than you naturally would have.

Yeah, that does happen. Some males will just bald a little (or a lot) and that'll be the hairline they keep for their entire lives. Some males will just lose it all right when they turn 20, it's genetics.

Finasteride should be taken with aromatase blockers because finasteride alone will increase estrogen production and give you man boobs. The dose for both drugs should be found scientifically by measuring hormone levels with blood tests.
