the meme that science is for smart people means that science attracts loads and loads of dumb people with narcissistic delusions of intellectual grandiosity.
statistically, dumb people are far more common than smart people and since delusions of grandiosity are common in over 10% of the population, which is a far larger total number of people than the genuinely smart percentage of the population, science ends up being filled with mostly idiots. the few smart people notice this and quickly find something else to do and the end result is science being nearly 100% morons.
