It's a long story, but basically a Stanford vision experiment in 2012 led the the explosion in modern AI.
Well, imagine if there was a program dedicated to computer science experiments that'd mimic as many aspects of the human body as we can.

But yes, one can basically replace 'AI' with 'modern computers' in any given article about it.
