🧵 "AI is a Serious Danger to Math" –Japanese Mathematician
Anonymous at Fri, 29 Mar 2024 14:16:36 UTC No. 16103219
>The legendary Japanese mathematician Shinichi Mochizuki expressed his fear of the use of AI in research mathematics, >stating that because LLMs can do nothing more than produce sentences via "mechanically searched contextual concatenations devoid of any human understanding",
>its rise in use could significantly slow down mathematical research.
so basically what he is saying is that random nonsense hallucinated by ChatGPT makes about as much sense as any other text, even to the reviewers who are supposed to be experts on the field.
This is ultimate proof that eveything beyond calculus is is nothing but a jewish brainfart. Advanced math is the most useless horse shit in existence.
its all nonsense. even infinitesimal calculus is bullshit and completely detached from reality. infinity doesnt exist. these math faggots get paid to shitpost.
>but mUh hEcKiNg pErFeCtOid SpacEs doe!!1101!!
the assertion that we need all this hyper abstract nonsense for tech is a jewish lie. the romans and egyptians built empires with 7th grade math. real math is just a tool, modern math is a circle jerk. same goes for modern physics.
>lOoOoK aT mE iM aBsTrAcTiNg!!!!
>iM tHe SmArtEst aUtIsT iN Da rOoMMM!!!
what a pathetic waste of tax money.
Math is the fakest and gayest shit in academia and on the same level as physics and gender studies.
i hope AI kills it.

LLMs are not all of AI. And LLMs are indeed just an overgrown autocomplete, incapable of actual reasoning. The reason LLMs give the illusion of being adjacent to general intelligence, is because they're trained on text covering a broad set of topics. They are a reflection of our general intelligence. LLMs may not be AGI, but they can be good enough for some tasks.

Solving a giant sudoku or a giant 1 billon pieces puzzle would be hard, probably even harder than some math problems and equally worthless.
Pure math is a scam that rests on a broken promise.
We tell kids that pure math research is awesome, cool and high status and thats how research works, we never know what application to those pure math results we will find in the future.
Thats not how math was invented, not how it evolved. Every piece of interesting math was motivated by applications and the study of objects in the real world, not by pure research.
Every pure mathematician we fund is just picking a high iq retard and pushing him to solve giant puzzles with. We are probably losing some of our brightest minds to pure inane dribble.
We need more applied mathematicians.

how about hope it becomes useful?
if the romans and egyptians could build empires with 7th grade math, imagine what we could do with more advanced math, using it as a tool rather than circlejerking.
do you really blame the current shitshow we're in on the failure of advanced math? it's WARLORDS, dumbfucks. until/if the world improves, you can't make fair judgments on what is/isn't useful, because everything is fucked right now.
how about we preserve things instead of shaving things off until we're bugs, then having a civil war so that the machine goes unpunished?

This is an understatement lol, try asking it basic fucking combinatorics questions and see how many unique incorrect answers it will confidently give you from a single prompt.
And it seems like it's already soft-locked in terms of mathematics; every textbook available is *already present* in the training data. It's just sub-infant level semantic understanding. I would go so far as to say that the texts would need to be rewritten specifically for AI to start fixing this problem.

Two years ago this type of issue would've probably took me 2 weeks to get an halfassed answer from that cocky 80yo professor and some incomprehensible 2 step solution from some random pajeet on stackexchange that makes you learn absolutely nothing because of the amount of steps it skips.
For a tool that gets you half of your questions right unassisted it would be really dumb to not use it to speed up your workflow by 10x. I figured out that most of difficulties with solving shit was due to creativity slumps. Even when LLMs are wrong they're giving you a different approaches to solve shit.
